LastRound vs Disposable Cotton Pads: An Honest Comparison

Disposable cotton pads are one of the most bought and least questioned products in any skincare routine. Most people go through 250–365 per year — one or two a day for toner, makeup removal, or cleansing. They come in plastic packaging, are used for thirty seconds, and go straight in the bin. LastRound was designed as a direct replacement: the same format, better material, machine washable, and built to last years.

This is an honest comparison. We make one of these products, and we have said so clearly. All data on disposables is from publicly available sources.

Are Reusable Cotton Pads Hygienic?

The short answer: yes, when washed correctly. LastRound is machine washable at 60°C — the temperature independently confirmed to hygienically clean cotton against bacteria including MRSA. Each set comes with a mesh laundry bag so the pads stay together in the machine and come out ready to use again.

Independent hygiene testing confirms that washed LastRound pads meet the same hygiene standards as new cotton pads. Makeup residue washes out fully with a standard detergent cycle.

Performance: Does the Material Make a Difference?

LastRound is made from a blend of natural cotton and wood fibres (lyocell/Tencel-type). The texture is slightly more structured than a standard disposable pad, which some people prefer for toner application, and equally effective for makeup removal with micellar water or cleansing oil. There is a short adjustment period during the first few uses while the fibres soften. After that, performance is equivalent to a mid-premium disposable.

The Numbers: Waste and Cost

One pack of 7 LastRound pads replaces 1,750 single-use pads over its lifetime. At an average of one pad per day, that is nearly five years of use from a single set. Disposable cotton pads typically cost £1–3 per pack of 100 — that is 4–5 packs per year, every year. The LastRound set pays back within months.

Who Should Switch?

LastRound is ideal for: anyone with a daily skincare routine using cotton pads for toner, makeup removal, or cleansing. The swap takes two minutes and removes one of the largest sources of daily bathroom waste.

Disposable cotton pads still make sense if: you are travelling light with no laundry access, or need a pad for a one-off use.
